The origins of SilverShadows date back to prehistory when humans were hunter-gatherers and lived in small tribal groups. Apparently the combination of an herb and a viral infection transformed the medicine women of some of these primitive groups. These older, wise women became physically stronger, more intuitive, and had better healing skills. Their senses became sharper and more intense. Some of them were still young enough to have children who inherited these changes. Their powers have been passed down through the maternal line for many centuries.

Women who inherit the SilverShadow genes don’t know who they are until they go through menopause. Estrogen represses their powers. As estrogen levels begin to fall during the early stages of menopause, they begin to experience the gradual onset of their transformation. Members of the SilverShadows Order contact them to explain the startling changes which are beginning. They may choose to train with the order to optimize their talents and to band together to use their powers for good. Or, they can decide for personal reasons to suppress and control the changes and to continue their lives as independents. Secrecy is absolutely required. Women with these powers have been persecuted since the beginning. Humans fear that which they do not understand.
